Januaryis devoted to the Holy Name of Jesus.

Notable Catholic Feast Days in January

The Catholic Church dedicates each month of the year to a particular devotion, and January is devoted to the Holy Name of Jesus. This tradition is rooted in the former Feast of the Circumcision of Christ, once celebrated on January 1st—eight days after Christmas, in accordance with Jewish custom. It was on this day that the Child Jesus received His sacred name, a name that in Hebrew means “God saves.”

The Feast of the Holy Name of Jesus, celebrated on January 3rd, deepens this monthly devotion. First granted to the Franciscans in 1530 and later embraced throughout the Church, this feast invites the faithful to honor the Holy Name with renewed love and reverence. It reminds us that the name of Jesus is holy, powerful, and worthy of being spoken with profound respect, tenderness, and devotion.

It begins on January 1st, with the Feast of the Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God. This feast highlights Mary’s role in the Incarnation of Her divine Son, whose name was revealed to her by the angel Gabriel.

The Epiphany, celebrated on January 6th, commemorates the visit of the Magi to the baby Jesus, recognizing Him as the Messiah and Savior of the world.

The Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, celebrated on January 11th, marking the beginning of His ministry and confirming His identity as the Son of God, usually falls on the second Sunday of January and concludes the Christmas season.
